| The Youngest Girl |
The youngest girl engages her world when she sees fit
And with just a touch dispels the weak and weary
And brings on the true
Coughing up ghosts of nobles and heroes
The youngest girl digs through shapes and colors like seashells in a plastic pail
Lining them up along the shore
And two lovers kiss on the sands of a California beach
And in Belgium Napoleon loses a dream
All this while she transcends the planet
And joins the other satellites
With only the great wall visible below
The youngest girl under a white stucco ceiling
Taken with the wonders of God and nylon and honey bees
Falls asleep before saints that dance
And the other girls are sitting in wicker chairs on the porch
Telling stories
